Life happens. We get sick. The kids get sick. The dog gets sick. We have to clean up messes. Our own messes. Our kids’ messes. The dog’s messes. Sometimes somebody’s mess we don’t even know. Life happens. But we can’t let that get in the way of achieving our goals. We can’t use life as an excuse. Because it’s life. It’s messy and unpredictable. And it’s never going to go as planned. In face, it's part of the journey toward our goals. We need to plan for life.
If you’re not already, plan the next day the night before. Block out what you’ll be doing every hour of your day. Allow for an hour to do administrative tasks such as return phone calls, emails, etc. Make sure you have three things scheduled to take you closer to achieving your goals. No matter how small the step, the important thing is that you are closer to achieving your goal than you were before. If you can accomplish three small steps, that’s real progress!
Schedule set office hours — hours you dedicate to work. Be as consistent as possible in maintaining them. If you work with customers, set time outside of your business hours to work toward your goals. Customers are great, but you need time away from them to propel your business forward! Schedule time for family and social activities, too. You’ll find that family time will spill into work and vice versa, but the key is to find an overall balance so you don’t find yourself working 70 hours a week for months at a time.
Some days you’ll be able to accomplish more, some days less, but always strive for at least three. That may mean a few late nights. Stay focused on the end result. If you find you’re consistently up late to complete your tasks, you may be scheduling too much into your day or you are letting things throw you off schedule. Learn to be firm in your schedule, set boundaries, and be disciplined. Delegate tasks and say “no” to activities that don’t bring you closer to your goal. Remember, if you say “yes” to someone, you’re saying “no” to your own tasks.
Being disciplined and not making excuses is the key to achieving your goals. A tough accountability partner is an asset when it comes to pointing out lame excuses. If you are interested in learning more, contact Rethink Marketing at 563-580-5657.
