It's tough when there's no money coming in to invest in marketing to drive traffic. Can you drive traffic with little or no money? The good news is that yes, with a bit of grit, there is hope! The following are a few ideas to implement into your marketing plan are little or no cost, but will go far in exposure.
Speaking engagements. Do your prospects attend conferences or luncheons? Contact the organizer and offer to speak on a relevant topic. Keep in mind, people aren't going to this event to hear a sales pitch so make sure you are offering valuable information that positions you as an expert in your field. Closing with an invitation to learn more about your offerings and perhaps offering a special rate or bonus to the audience is a great way to wrap up your presentation if you can tie it in. Make sure to capture email addresses from everyone so you can follow up with attendees.
Email. Email, for whatever reason, is often overlooked, but it's a very effective and inexpensive tactic to communicate your offerings. Again, the key is to offer something of value in your emails. Provide information they can use in their day, and they'll look forward to opening your messages.
Web site. Assuming you already have one, make sure it's optimized. Ensure keywords are ranking and modify appropriately. Also make sure your call-to-action is clear and eye-catching.
In-store merchandising. Make sure you have point-of-sale signs upselling your customers. Insert flyers in their bags with their purchase inviting them to come back to the next big sale. Don't have a bricks-and-mortar store? This still applies to you! Make sure your site is promoting your specials on your home page and clearly link to the products.
Referrals. Ask your clients if they know of anyone who could benefit from your offerings. It's easy to assume they would do that without being prompted, but not so! Give them extra business cards, or better yet, give them a first-time discount card to pass along to their friends. Reward your clients with a discount or bonus for their referrals.
Social media. While it's a pay-to-play game now more than ever, it's an affordable game to play. And even if you don't pay, your posts will still receive some eyeballs. Include a link to your site and capture their email address so you don't have to pay to communicate with them again.
Retention. It costs far less to keep a customer than to get a new one. Let them know you appreciate them with a special offer. Pamper them lavishly and they'll eagerly return.
Sales calls. Chances are when you started your business you hustled. You were out making cold calls, meeting new people and networking every chance you got. Is that still the case today?
While most of these tactics can be executed by you or your staff, hiring a marketing consultant to guide your messaging and activities can help you find efficiencies in your efforts and save you time and money in the long run.
